The painting is yellower in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The relined canvas is a little loose. The paint surface is dirty and secure, under a discoloured varnish, but flat throughout, particularly in the sky, background and in the figures, and in the Madonna's red cape whose colour has faded, and in the trees upper left. No major damages are present, though some discoloured retouchings can be made out with the naked eye for example in the outline of Sebastian's head, Peter's left shoulder and blue shirt and the left thigh of Jesus. Inspection under UV light confirms these as well as pointing to a few further retouchings in the Madonna'd and Jesus's face as well as some old strengthenings in Sebastian's face. Offered in a carved wood frame in good condition with some minor losses.

L'opera è riferibile alla produzione nota del pittore, le calme ed equilibrate figure sacre e la tipologia compositiva di natura fortemente belliniana richiamano i dipinti tipici del Bissolo, come la Madonna col Bambino, San Paolo e una Santa martire della National Gallery di Londra o la Sacra conversazione con due donatori, conservata nella stessa sede.
L'artista, probabilmente nativo di Treviso, esordì nella bottega del Bellini, attiva in Palazzo Ducale a Venezia nell'ultimo decennio del Quattrocento, seppur come modesto indoratore, e a questa prima formazione rimase sempre legato, riproponendo schemi e tipologie desunte dal maestro veneto.
A latere della produzione pittorica, Bissolo si dedicò probabilmente anche ad attività artigianali con una certa continuità, se lo ritroviamo nel 1540 nuovamente nel Palazzo Ducale veneziano, con mansioni simili.
Ai modi belliniani si intrecciarono, negli anni Venti, anche suggestioni da  Palma il Vecchio e Giorgione, costruendo una tela di richiami stilistici che guardò sempre alla complessa e variegata temperie artistica veneziana. Di sottile impronta palmesca appaiono anche le figure della nostra opera, nel modellato pieno e nell'immobilità solenne che le avvolge in un'atmosfera astratta e senza tempo.
