Opera in prima tela. Ad un primo esame si notano ritocchi lungo i bordi dovuti alla battitura della cornice, craquelures su tutta la superficie con qualche sollevamento senza prdita di materia sopra il piede destro della bambina. L'esame alla lampada di Wood evidenzia uno spesso strato di vernice fluorescente distribuita disomogeneamente su tutta la superficie, restauri lungo i bordi in corrisppondenza della batitura della cornice. Alcuni ritocchi sul cielo al centro in alto, altri sulla mano della donna e della bambina, un ritocco (cm 1 x 2) sul piede destro della bimba, un ritocco orizzontale (cm 5 circa) sulla calza appoggiata a sinistra, ritocchi nell'angolo inferiore destro ed altri ritocchi sparsi più estesi rispetto alle effettive mancanze. Si consiglia un'attenta pulitura. Painting on original canvas. From a first hand inspection some retouches are visible along the edges due to the frame, craquelures over the surface with small dethaced areas without losses over the girl right foot. The ultra violet light reveals thick fluorescent varnsi dishomogeneously spread over the surface, retouches along the edges, others over the sky, over the mother' and girl's hands, one (cm 1 x 2) over the girl's foot, an horizontal one ( cm 5 circa) over the soc on the left, retouches over the left hand side corner and other spread over the surface larger than needed. A careful cleansing is suggested.

L'opera qui presentata, di cui esiste un disegno preparatorio a sanguigna (fig.1) pubblicato dalla moglie Giulia Hoffman (G. Hoffmann, Michele Tedesco. L'opera, Milano 1915, pag.11), fa certamente parte della serie di tele che Tedesco dedicò all'analisi e studio dell'amore materno puntando l'attenzione sulla psicologia dei personaggi. In Madre e figlia, infatti, l'artista rappresenta la stessa dolcezza affrontata in Una famiglia del 1881: ricorre in entrambe le tele il gesto protettivo della madre che cinge con dolcezza la vita del proprio bimbo.
