Catalogue Note
This is one of Leoni's well-known series of portrait drawings, depicting members of early 17th-century Roman society. Pierre-Jean Mariette saw the group in the sale of Monsieur d'Aubigny in 1747, where he noted that the 400 portraits had once belonged to Prince Borghese.1 Like the present sheet, many are inscribed with numbers and dates, and with the name of the sitter on the verso.
