Condition

Glued at the top margin and at the bottom right corner to the old mounting sheet. Possibly slightly trimmed all around, there is a pen and ink inscription which has been visibly reduced at the bottom, some slight discolaration from the glue at the top and light staining around the margins. Some surface dirt and the paper is also slightly undulating at the top where glued. Chalk is fresh and generally drawing is in good condition.

Catalogue Note

The drawing bears an old attribution to Nicolò dell'Abate which has been endorsed by Sylvie Beguin. The subtle use of the orange chalk and the quickness of the lines are quite characteristic of the artist. The unusual iconography suggests that it might have been intended for a banner perhaps commissioned by a religious order.
