  • Portrait of a Gentleman, a member of the Rosmel family, in a feigned oval
  • inscribed and dated upper left: Ætatis 64/ Aº1648 with the coat of arms of a member of the Rosmel family, Liège;
    bears inscription upper right: D. CORNELIO de Licht Presiden/ Te de las CASAS de la Moneda/ de Flandes=

Provenance

Probably acquired by the George Villiers, 4th Earl of Clarendon (1800-1870), during his ambassadorship in Madrid;
Thence by descent to the present owner.

Condition

The canvas has a firm relining. The paint surface is secure if a little thin in the darker areas. There is a small damage upper left above his ear. There is a dirty old varnish which impedes thorough inspection under UV although some minor scattered retouchings do fluoresce. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame structurally sound but with some losses.

Catalogue Note

The sitter has traditionally been identified as Cornelis de Licht because of an inscription upper right however this was added later.  The coat of arms upper left is contemporary with the painting and identifies the sitter as a member of the Rosmel family, Liège.
