- Portrait of a Gentleman, half length, wearing a black cap, a fur collar and lace cuffs

Provenance
Possibly the "Gentleman in a Fur gown - Kitcat" recorded in Lord Hyde's inventory of 1750;
If so Henry Hyde, 2nd Earl of Rochester and later 4th Earl of Clarendon (1672-1753), by 1750;
by descent to his grand-daughter, Charlotte (d.1790), eldest daughter of William Capel, 3rd Earl of Essex (1697-1743), who married Thomas Villiers, 1st Earl of Clarendon (1709-1786), of the second creation;
Thence by descent to the present owner.

Condition
The canvas has been relined.
The paint surface appears secure under a very old dirty varnish although some details of the paint work do show through. There are some old minor unobtrusive surface scratches lower left as visible in the catalogue illustration. Inspection under UV light is impeded by the aforementioned varnish.
Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame, structurally sound with some knocks.
