Circle of Giacomo Guardi

The canvas has been relined. No major damages are visible to the naked eye but there is a very small stretch of frame abrasion along the centre of the lower margin. There are 11 tiny damages repaired to the reverse most of which are unobtrusively restored on the front and the largest of which is 2cm2 lower right. The paint surface is secure, with the detail of the foreground well preserved. There are signs of abrasion in the darker brown pigments to the left of the foreground. There is a vertical varnish stain running approximately 1cm. in from the left hand margin and ending at the top of the left hand building, as visible in the catalogue illustration. The very slightly discoloured varnish largely masks retouching work on the painting, but inspection under UV light does reveal that a very fine craquelure across the foreground and in parts of the sky has been very finely filled in. UV also reveals some minor, delicate, scattered strengthenings to the buildings to the left and right of the painting. Though some of these additions have become discoloured they are very fine and certainly do not detract from the appreciation of the work. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in good condition, if a little rubbed.
