Description

  • Claude-Louis Châtelet
  • views of the grand cascade and the cascade del marmore at terni, near rome
  • a pair, both oil on canvas

Provenance

Private Collection, Paris, since the 19th Century until sold,
Monaco, Sotheby's, 21-22 June 1991, lot 149, where acquired by the present owner.

Condition

The latter image is slightly more subdued in the catalogue illustration than it appears in the original. Both canvases are unlined but the paint surface is still secure and in good original condition with thick chunks of impasto remaining under a glossy varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals scarcely any retouchings although the glossy varnish does hamper thorough examination. Offered in matching gilt wood and plaster frames in good condition.

Catalogue Note

The cascades near Terni, some 60 km north of Rome, rise up to 650 ft. and are among the highest in Europe. They were popular sites for 18th century vedutisti and Chatelet himself evidently found a ready market for his views. Another such pair, of slightly larger dimensions (96.5 by 63.5 cm.) were sold New York, Sotheby's, 13 October 1989, lot 67.
