The tone of the original is a little less yellow than it appears in the catalogue illustration. The canvas has an effective relining. There are some minor scattered losses as visible in the catalogue illustration but the paint surface is otherwise secure and in generally in good condition under an old yellowed varnish which obscures thorough inspection under UV light. Offered in a ornate gilt wood and plaster frame in good condition.

In style, handling, composition and physiognomies this painting strongly recalls Giuseppe Maria Crespi's Holy Family in the Fine Arts Gallery, San Diego (see R. Roli, Pittura Bolognese 1650-1800. Dal Cignani ai Gandolfi, Bologna 1977, reproduced fig. 180a).
