Description
- Christ at the Column
- oil on panel, in an engaged frame
Provenance
With Manuel González, Madrid;
From whom acquired by the father of the present owner in 1968, as Pedro Sánchez;
Thence by descent.
Literature
D.J. Camón Aznar, Historia General del Arte, Summa Artis, 1966, vol. XXII, p. 657, as Pedro Sánchez.
Condition
The stable support consists of a single panel.
The paint surface is clean and secure, with the colours still vibrant. Three circular old, restored knocks are visible to the naked eye to the upper left of the painting. The largest of these is about 8cm in diameter. An old restored U shaped crack in the panel, again probably due to a knock, which starts on the right hand side of Christ's chest and ends at the centre of the column, can be made out due to the discoloured retouchings to the area. There is furthermore a small horizontal restored scratch of approximately 4cm. just below the wound at the top right hand of Christ's chest. Finally, a very small and restored horseshoe-shaped surface damage can just be made out on Christ's right cheek. A fine craquelure runs throughout the painting.
Inspection under UV light confirms the retouchings made to the aforementioned areas, and further reveals just some minor scattered retouchings in the background and in Christ's beard. Christ otherwise remains intact, bar some minor strengthenings in his crown and hands. Some older retouchings are faintly visible under the varnish which covers the paint surface.
Offered in an engaged gilt frame, in fair condition.
