Description

  • Thomas Heeremans
  • A village on the banks of a river with numerous people drinking outside an inn
  • signed lower left with monogram: THMANS (THM in ligature)
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Pulitzer Gallery, London;
Acquired from an associate of the above for the present collection in 1968.

Condition

The canvas has a modern and tight relining, which has rather flattened the paint surface. The paint surface is under a slightly discoloured varnish, and some areas of abrasion and subsequent retouching can be made out in the sky with the naked eye. The signed paint surface is otherwise in good condition with no structural damages. Inspection under UV light is not conclusive due to the reflective varnish, though some recent strengthenings in a few scattered figures and buildings fluoresce. Further retouchings are present under the varnish though these are clearer with the naked eye than with UV light. The painting would benefit from a surface clean to improve the overall tonality. Offered in a modern carved wooden frame in good condition.
