Description

  • Willem Claesz. Heda
  • a monochrome still life with a silver-gilt goblet, an overturned silver tazza, a pewter flagon, glasses and a salt cellar, with a crab, oysters, nuts, a knife and a peeled lemon on a table draped with a white cloth
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous Sale, London, Christie's, 1st March 1991, lot 132, for £24,000 (as Gerrit Willemsz. Heda).

Condition

The painting is less red and brighter than the catalogue illustration suggests. Behind a board backing, a recent relining is discernible. This has been well executed and has not flattened the paint surface, which is under a discoloured varnish. To the naked eye the paint surface appears secure and stable, with the impasto well preserved in the details of the jugs, the goblet, the tazza and the flagon, and no major damages apparent. Inspection under UV light reveals extensive yet localised strengthenings in the sky, in the jug and in the tablecloth, and these have resulted in a partial loss of definition. A vertical line of approx. 40cm. runs centrally, along which retouchings have been applied. Further retouchings fluoresce lower centre in the tablecloth, a small restored hole under the plate, strengthenings in the crab and in the glass centre right. Offered in a painted, black, wooden frame with some minor losses.
