Description

  • Jan Wijnants
  • A dune landscape with young men fishing, a homestead and travellers beyond
  • signed and dated lower right: J Wijnants/ 1646(?)
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Believed to have been acquired by the grandfather of the present owners during the early part of the 20th century.

Condition

The actual painting is less red and more subtle in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is relined. The paint surface is in good condition, albeit that there is minor tendency towards cupping in the sky, and some tiny discoloured retouchings are visible, as can be seen in the catalogue illustration. Furthermore no major damages are apparent. UV reveals the retouchings in the sky, some small ones along the lower edge and in the figure to the right, but also reveals an unevenly cleaned varnish layer. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame, in good condition. (ML)
