Condition

The canvas has been relined and this hasn't overly flattened the paint surface. The paint surface is clean with some areas of thinness in the waterfront and trees centre left. Strengthenings have been made to the darker tones of the painting, for example in the foreground, the building and in the darker regions of the sky. The latter in particular seem to have been applied partly due to the paint being applied thinly originally rather than in response to aggressive abrasion. No major damages are visible to the naked eye, but UV light reveals an old, restored, diagonal tear of approximately 8cm. in length above and to the left of the building, and furthermore a small restored hole, approximately 1 by 2cm. to the right of this. Overall the painting is clean, in good condition and the colours remain vibrant. Offered in an ornate gilt wood and plaster frame in good condition, if a little rubbed.
