Description

  • Anthonie de Lorme
  • The interior of a church at night, with elegant figures
  • signed and dated lower left: A. de Lorme,/ 1638.

  • oil on panel

Provenance

Bought by the aunt of the present owner in the 1950s;
Thence by descent.

Condition

The painting is less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The stable support consists of two horizontal panels, cradled to the reverse. There is evidence of some slight frame abrasion to the right hand side of the painting and a more noticeable stretch of abrasion to the upper margin. The panel join is visible on the surface to the right hand side of the painting but there is no paint loss in this area. The paint surface is secure and clean, under a glossy varnish. Extensive abrasion to the darker tones throughout the painting and discoloured retouchings can be made out with the naked eye. Proper inspection under UV light is somewhat impeded by the varnish, however this does reveal retouchings to the right and left hand edges of the panel join and fairly extensive retouchings and strengthenings to the interior along with minor scattered retouchings and strengthenings to the figures. Offered in a wooden frame with gilt plaster mouldings in good condition with no major losses.
