Catalogue Note
Another smaller version of this composition was sold London, Sotheby's, 30 November 1966, lot 85 (panel, 33 x 42 cm.) as by Teniers himself, but is most probably a studio replica or early copy. On the basis of photographs Dr. Margret Klinge believes both paintings are studio works and that the prime original by Teniers himself, signed and unusually on canvas, is that formerly with Charles Sedelmeyer in Paris and now in a Swiss private collection. Dr. Klinge knows of at least ten versions of this compostion, but this painting is the only one known to her which is on a copper panel.
