Catalogue Note
No extant original of this composition by Avercamp himself is known, but many figure types here derive from his works of the 1620s. The figures of the chestnut seller and his young clients on the right hand side of the picture, for example, derive from a pen and ink drawing in the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin, and recur on the left hand side of a panel of around 1620 by Avercamp today in the Corporation of London, Harold Samuel Collection1.
