Description

  • Gysbrecht Leytens
  • a winter landscape with woodcutters on a bank beside a frozen canal, a village to the right
  • oil on panel

Condition

The support appears to consist of two horizontal panels although it is difficult to say with certainty due to the heavy cradling on the reverse. There is an old horizontal split upper right which is just visible on the front although the paint is still generally secure in this area. The paint surface is secure, although there are some minor areas of lifting along the margins, and in good condition with much remaining impasto. There are two old surfaces scratches lower centre as visible in the catalogue illustration. The paint surface has cracked along the panel join lower left. Inspection under UV light reveals some minor retouching along the crack and aforementioned split but little work elsewhere. Offered in a wooden frame with faux marble insets in good condition.

Catalogue Note

Leytens made numerous variations of this, his most successful compositional type, throughout his career. One such variation, without the homestead to the right and with fewer figures, was sold London, Christie's, 3 December 2008, lot 150. Another, more crowded at the left, but with the homestead and the figure in the foreground raising his axe, was exhibited at Saarbrücken and Rouen, Chefs-d'Oeuvres Oubliés, in June - September 1954.
