Description

  • Jan Breughel the Younger
  • A wooded river Landscape with the Holy Family and the infant St. John the Baptist
  • oil on copper

Provenance

Acquired by the family of the present owner in Paris in the middle of the 20th century.

Condition

The copper panel is backed with a modern wooden board and has a slightly uneven surface. Overall the paint surface is quite well preserved alhough some parts of the distant landscape are now rather abraded. The varnish layer is uneven. The figure group retains much of the original brushwork, as does the still life and the foreground landscape. Restored losses and retouchings to the folds of the Madonna's red drapery are discernible with the naked eye. Inspection under UV light reveals further minor scattered retouchings throughout. Offered in an ornate plaster gilt frame in good condition.
