Catalogue Note
Lear first visited Greece in 1848, making a number of subsequent trips there, notably in 1849, 1855 and 1858. So enchanted was he with the people and landscape that he settled on the island of Corfu between 1861 and 1877. Lear's final visit to the country was in 1877. Mount Olympus is located in the north western region of mainland Greece, and it was believed to be the home of the Gods.
