Catalogue Note

Hawking was a popular pastime in the nineteenth century and during the 1830s the artist executed various works that focused on birds of prey. In 1837 he exhibited two oil paintings at the Royal Academy; Return from Hawking (The Duke of Sutherland) and Falcon and Hooded Falcon (Private Collection). The present two exquisitely drawn sketches may relate to these oils.
