Condition

The enamel is in good condition. There are two firing lines at the bottom left and right corners of the composition. Although visible these were caused during the original firing process. Running horizontally across the sitter's chest is an area of restoration. However, this has been so skilfully done that it is hardly visible. The enamel has bowed slightly, this also having occurred naturally during firing. Catalogue Note

Laura dei Dianti was the daughter of a hat-maker from Ferrara. In 1519 she became the mistress of Alfonso d'Este, Duke of Ferrara (1476–1534) and bore him two sons. Although it appears that she never actually married Alfonso, from 1534 she was referred to as the 'Duchess'. As Bone's extensive inscription reveals he executed this enamel in 1811, whilst the original oil painting was in the collection of the Earls of Suffolk. Titian's oil was painted in circa 1523 and has a very distinguished provenance. Previous owners include: Queen Christina of Sweden, Prince Odescalchi, Rome and the Dukes of Orleans. It now forms part of the Kisters Collection, Switzerland.
