  • Red chalk over black chalk, within brown ink framing lines;
    signed and inscribed in red chalk, lower right: L.F. Delarue Fecit roma; bears numbering in brown ink: no. 69.

Condition

Sold in reproduction carved and gilded frame. Laid down on old (18th Century?) mount. Not seen out of frame. The paper is somewhat yellowed, but the chalk is still strong. A very slight area of damage near the lower left corner, but otherwise the condition is good.

Catalogue Note

Louis Félix de la Rue was a pupil of the sculptor Lambert Sigisbert Adam, called Adam l'aîné.  He received the Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1750 and went on to become a professor at the Académie de Saint-Luc.  He is known for his bacchanal scenes, in both drawing and sculpture.
