Catalogue Note

These two sheets come from an important group of Spanish drawings, sold from the Stirling-Maxwell collection in 1979 (see Provenance). Five of those drawings, illustrating episodes from the life of Saint Francis de Paula, were clearly by the same hand and must originally have formed part of a larger series.  In the sale catalogue, they were attributed to Vicente Carducho, an attribution endorsed by Mckim Smith in 1984, when cataloguing the two sheets from the group that had been acquired by the Pierpont Morgan Library. Mckim Smith compared the Morgan drawings to those depicting scenes from the life of St. Diego de Alcalá, in the Uffizi.1  Another drawing from the same series, now in the collection of the Hispanic Society of America (inv. no. LA 425), has, however, been given by Priscilla Muller to the circle of Carducho.

The subject represented is the moment when a king, possibly the French King Charles VIII, alongside his son and courtiers, kneels before the Saint, with an altar nearby.
