Condition

The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is clean and secure, with some minor abrasion in the darker areas of the background and in the darker blues of the painting. An old damage of approx 1.5 cm2 is visible on the left hand side of the Madonna's headband. the retouching work to this area is visible to the naked eye and is confirmed under UV light, which also reveals other scattered retouchings, particularly in the background. Offered in an ornate carved gilt wood frame with plaster mouldings, with some minor losses.

Catalogue Note

A copy after Sassoferrato's original which, according to Witt Library mounts, was sold in New York in 19151 and was subsequently with Colnaghi in 1952. The original was engraved by John Boydell in 1767.
