Catalogue Note
Although Joseph Heintz the Younger painted a number of religious works for churches in and around Venice, his primary importance as an artist in the city was in his depictions of state ceremonies and city festivals. The present lot shows the Sala del Collegio in the doge's palace, and Veronese's fresco of the battle of Lepanto on the end wall. Another smaller version of the same scene was offered Versailles, Perrin, Royère, LaJeunesse, 28 November 1999, lot 50.
