Condition

The support consists of a single panel, cradled to the reverse, with a slight convex bow. There is a vertical split of approx. 18cm, running down from the centre of the upper edge and a few other minor surface cracks all visible in the catalogue illustration. The paint surface is otherwise secure, though abraded in the darker areas of the painting. Inspection under UV light reveals some fairly extensive old retouching work. Offered in a slip wood frame.

Catalogue Note

A copy, probably by a French hand, after the original painting in the Louvre, now thought to have been executed by a member of Raphael's workshop (see J. Meyer zur Capellen, Raphael. A Critical Catalogue of his Paintings, vol. II, Landshut 2005, pp. 251-54, cat. no. A9, reproduced).
