  • oil on panel, circular, in a tabernacle frame

Provenance

Anonymous sale, New York, Sotheby's, 7 November 1985, lot 4.

Literature

A. Dubois de Groër, Corneille de La Haye dit Corneille de Lyon, Alençon 1997, p. 237, no. 161A.

Condition

The skin tones of the original are a little pinker than they appear in the catalogue illustration. The support consists of a single stable circular panel, cradled to the reverse. The paint surface is secure and clean, if a little thin but overall in good condition. Inspection under UV light reveals some fairly extensive repainting in the green of the background, and some other scattered, more minor retouching in the figure. Offered in a black painted tabernacle frame with painted gold decoration, blue glass columns and mother of pearl and glass insets, with some minor losses.
