  • Inscribed upper right: Ætatis Suæ 72 / Anno Do 1621, and on a document on the table: Illustri Viro Domino / Henrico Sauilio e Domino / et amico nostro colendo / Londinium, and later inscribed upper right: Sir Henry Savile / Provost of Eton and Founder of the Savilian / Professorship at Oxford.

Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in generally good condition. There is an old discoloured and dirty varnish overall, but no apparent signs of damage or loss of paint. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the opacity of the varnish, and reveals a very small number of scattered minor retouchings, predominantly at the edges of the canvas.
