Catalogue Note
This studio piece derives from the larger original composition in the Residenzgalerie Salzburg (oil on canvas, 269 by 377 cm; see R.-A. d'Hulst, Jacob Jordaens, London 1982, p. 196, plate 167). Although the still life elements were previously thought to be by Snyders it is more likely that they were executed by an unknown hand in Jordaens's studio and based on Snyders' work. The Salzburg composition has many more figures and a larger still life of fish lower left.
