Description
- Abraham Janssens
- JUPITER REBUKED BY VENUS ON MOUNT OLYMPUS
- oil on canvas, unframed
Condition
The canvas has an old wax relining, which has not overly flattened the paint surface.
There are a handful of old damages, most notable of which is an old restored damage of approx. 15cm lower left on Jupiter's elbow, patched to the reverse, and another diagonal restored damaged centre left of approx. 18cm. There is a small vertical tear, approx 3cm upper right, in Venus' left arm.
The paint surface is otherwise in good condition, with fine craquelure running throughout.
Inspection under UV light reveals retouching work to the aforementioned damages, and scattered retouchings elsewhere.
Offered unframed.

Catalogue Note
This is a studio version of Janssens' larger original composition, oil on canvas 197 by 237 cm., sold in these Rooms, 17 November 1982, lot 12 and now in the Chicago Institute of Art (see W.A. Liedtke et al., Flemish Paintings in America, Antwerp 1992, p. 341, no. 274).
Another larger autograph version exists in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, (oil on canvas 206 by 239 cm., for which see K. Renger, Flämische Malerei des Barock, Munich 2002, pp. 214-5, no. 4884). However, the present picture is closer to the Chicago version with the coloured plumes of Minerva's helmet back left and the inclusion of the head of Mercury beside her.
