STRUCTURE
The canvas has been lined.
PAINT SURFACE
The painting appears to be in good condition. There is some very minor small visible retouching in the sky in the centre of the canvas, and there is some minor abrasion in lower section of the painting, in the sea.
ULTRAVIOLET
Examination under ultraviolet light reveals strengthening in the sky, particularly in the upper left and in the upper centre. There is very minor retouching to two vertical stretcher marks, corresponding to the central stretcher bar, and there is some minor retouching to the upper edge of the canvas, where the picture meets the frame. There is some minor infilling to craquelure in the main sail of the central vessel and a small number of further scattered retouchings.
FRAME
Held in a gilt paint wooden frame.
