Description

  • Studio of John Frederick Herring, Senior
  • Pharaoh's Horse
  • inscribed, verso: A Study / J. F. Herring / Animal Painter to H.R.H. / the Duchess of Kent / Cottage Green / Camberwell
  • oil on canvas, framed as an oval, unlined

Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas is unlined and in good condition, with no apparent holes or tears. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in very good condition. There is an old and very discoloured dirty varnish overall, and there has been some slight abrasion in the lower section of the canvas. There is a fine craquelure throughout, consistent with the paintings age. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals strengthening in the lower section of the canvas, to the horses' chests, and in their maines. Otherwise the picture appears to have been untouched. FRAME Held in an elaborate neo baroque fame.
