STRUCTURE
The canvas has been lined.
PAINT SURFACE
The painting appears to be in generally good condition. There is a very dirty varnish overall, and some minor surface marks, particularly in the upper right. There are a small number of very minor chips to the paint on the lower right edge and in the lower right and left of the picture. There is also some general abrasion in the lower section of the picture, and a slightly pronounced craquelure to a small area in the lower centre.
ULTRAVIOLET
Examination under ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouching in the lower section of the picture.
FRAME
Held in a gilded wooden frame.

Catalogue Note
The arms in the upper right of the picture are those of the de Wogan family, of Rathcoffey, Co. Kildare. The family were prominent Jacobites and Emile's great grandfather had been naturalised as a French subject in 1724.
