Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition. There does not appear to be any paint loss or excessive craquelure and the painting is ready to hang. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals an area of old strengthening to the sky, in the centre of the canvas, and scattered more recent minor retouching, predominantly in the upper left of the canvas. The outlines of the two figures in the lower right have been strengthened, as have some of the darker tones in the right foreground, and in the fence. FRAME Held in a carved and gilded rococo style frame.

Catalogue Note

Best known for his marine subjects, the present painting is a rare example of Anderson's small London views in oil. Taken from the South East conner of Regent's Park, the view depicts the Queen's Head and Artichoke Inn, once run by Elizabeth I's royal gardener responsible for the cultivation of artichokes, as it was in 1805.
