STRUCTURE There canvas has been firmly relined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in reasonably good condition. There are some minor paint losses where the edge of the canvas meets the frame, however this is localised to the middle right and bottom left. There are also some minor but insignificant abrasions to the paint surface. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals considerable retouching particularly in the background to the sitter's right and the coat of the dog. FRAME Held in a gilded wood frame.
