Estimate

bidding is closed

Description

  • Jan Verkolje the Elder
  • Portrait of a Lady, three quarter length, in a blue dress with an armful of flowers
  • oil on canvas, a fragment

Provenance

With Leonard Koetser Ltd., London, 1962, from whom acquired by the father of the present owner.

Condition

The painting is greener and more red than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a modern relinign which has flattened the paint surface which is secured by a discoloured varnish. To the naked eye the paint surface appears to be abraded and extensively retouched. Inspection under UV light is not satisfactory due to the reflective varnish though extensive retouchings and repaint can be made out. Offered in a reproduction carved and gilt wood frame in fair condition.

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the R.K.D. for pointing out that this fragment has been cut down from a larger family portrait which when still whole was with the Art Collectors Association, London, during the early 20th century.
