The painting is cooler in tone and less red in colour than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has been recently relined but this has not overly flattened the paint surface which is clean and secure. The paint surface does, however, appear to be rather sunken and thin in the brown and black tones, with some scattered retouchings. Structurally the painting appears sound with no major damages. Inspection under UV light reveals quite extensive but localised painterly retouchings in the aforementioned darker tones to add definition. The browns of the seated woman are better conserved however. Offered in a later carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.
