Catalogue Note
The artist was almost certainly active in Lombardy and indeed many of the works attributed to him have remained there.1 His name is taken from several works which bear his monogram and which form a stylistically coherent corpus. The design of the present work is strikingly close to a work of very similar dimensions (97 by 130 cm.) formerly on the art market in Rome.2 Both paintings display a crowded and tiered composition with a basket of cherries above. The pears, baskets, and lettuces unmistakably point to the same hand, as do the lilies which pierce the composition with their strong white tone.
