Provenance

In the collection of the family of the present owners since at least the early twentieth century.

Condition

The canvas has an old lining which is stable. The paint surface is beautifully preserved throughout and covered by a protective layer of dirt and old varnish. There are some recent surface scratches just above the lower margin, a small resotred damage to the back of the saint's cloak lower right and another at the centre left. There are two areas of surface restoration to the background either side of the saint and directly above him. There may also have been some strengthening to the darker blues in the Virgin's dress. There are some small reotuchings eleswhere, but all very minor. Otherwise the painting is in very good condition and would benefit from the removal of the layers of dirt and old varnish.
