Description

  • Jan Breughel the Younger
  • A pair of allegories derived from the Reinaertcyclus or fables of Reynard the Fox
  • a pair, the former signed lower right: J. Brueghel.
the latter signed lower right: J. Brueghel. fecit

  • both oil on canvas, unframed

Condition

The colours of the originals are a little cooler and less yellow in tone than they appear in the catalogue illustration. Both canvases have been relined and these relinings have become loose and are starting to sag slightly, particularly in the former. Both paint surfaces are secure and in good condition under a dirty varnish. Inspection under UV light is hampered by the varnish but some very minor scattered retouching, most noticeably along the edges can be discerned in both canvases. Overall these paintings appear to be in good condition and are offered unframed.

Catalogue Note

As with Brueghel's other allegories from the 1640's these pictures are probably intended as political allegories, perhaps alluding to the Spanish occupation of the Southern Netherlands.
