Description

  • Jan Breughel the Younger
  • An Allegory of Peace
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has a firm relining which has somewhat flattened the surface. There is an old damage upper left of approx 10 cm squared. The paint surface is secure under a yellowed varnish. Scattered retouching work is visible to the naked eye in the seated, partially clothed woman lower left and this is confirmed under UV light which also reveals some other recent minor retouching work along the upper and left hand margin and some much older scattered minor work upper right. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

Very similar allegories, employing the same or similar garden elements, are published by Ertz as sold Amsterdam, Mak van Waay, 1 May 1971, lot 28, and formerly with Galerie Brandt, Amsterdam (K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Jungere, Freren 1984, pp.  397-98, nos. 236 and 237). As Ertz suggests these allegories were probably painted around 1648 to celebrate the end of the Eighty Years War.
