Catalogue Note

Charles Francis Stuart was the fourth and youngest son of Alexander, tenth Lord Blantyre. Born in 1780, he was called to the bar and served as Master of Chancery in India. On the reverse of the picture are Raeburn's cipher and well as the sitter's initials. Also attached are instructions from Stuart to his banker to transfer £105 to Raeburn. The portrait is known in other versions, including one painted by Sir Martin Shee.
