Catalogue Note

The present composition is known in a few versions, the prime example of which appears to be that in the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia (see A. Moir, Caravaggio and his Copyists, New York, p. 116, no. 103 and J. Spike, Caravaggio, 2001, no. 80).  While some scholars have considered this a reflection of a lost work by the artist, others consider it rather an interpretation of early works by Caravaggio.
