Le peintre anglais Josef Herman (1911-2000), sensibilisé par Jacob Epstein à l'art africain, avait constitué une très importante collection privilégiant les œuvres de petite dimension. William Fagg lui consacra, en 1970 et 1985, deux expositions : Small Sculptures of Africa et Miniature African Sculptures from the Herman Collection. Herman fut le premier à mettre en valeur la qualité sculpturale de ces "miniatures" : "J'ai toujours été intéressé par la monumentalité à petite échelle [...] La monumentalité est bien plus [qu'une grande dimension] - c'est une synthèse de la forme. Les miniatures africaines sont aussi formidables que celles provenant d'autres cultures prestigieuses" (in : The Antique Collector, septembre 1985 : 83-85). Trois de ses "miniatures" ont rejoint la collection de Lionel Sergent (cf. lots 113 et 148).

Cette statuette Sundi - comptant parmi les pièces préférées de Lionel Sergent - constitue l'un des témoins remarquables de la monumentalité sculpturale de ces œuvres, où convergent idéalement intimité, force et sensibilité.
