Very good condition overall. A loss to the top of the club face on the proper left side. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture (a few superficial chips and thin cracks).

Cette très belle massue courte, dite patu wahaika ("bouche de poisson"), se distingue par la puissance du personnage masculin émergeant en haut relief sur le fil, le torse bombé mis en valeur par les épaules rejetées en arrière et par la main aux trois doigts qui l'enserre - l'autre main s'étirant sur la lame comme pour mieux faire corps avec l'arme. Les massues courtes étaient utilisées par les Maori à la fois comme armes de combats rapprochés et symboles d'autorité. Les personnages sculptés sur le côté et à l'extrémité du pommeau sont interprétés comme des esprits mythologiques - l'arme étant destinée à ôter la vie (Moko Mead, 1984 : 210). Très belle patine d'usage brillante, brun rouge.
