Condition

Excellent condition overall. On one side, small area of few superficial losses to the nephrite, certainly inherent to the stone itself and present at the time of the club's manufacture.

Catalogue Note

patu pounamou, sculptée dans une pierre d'une grande beauté, dont le poli met en valeur les nuances marbrées. Les massues courtes en néphrite, dites pounamou ("trésor vert") à la fois armes et insignes de prestige, étaient réservées à l'usage exclusif des chefs. cf. Moko Mead (1984 : 225, n° 149) pour une massue en néphrite conservée au Taranaki Museum, datant de la période Te Puawaitanga (1500 - 1800).
