Catalogue Note

Betel mortar, Modang Province, Ramu River Delta or Manam Island, Papua New Guinea

It is the surrealism of the design – with the legs twisted back so as to impose upon the viewer a form which encapsulates the whole bust in a single expression, in the excessiveness of the nose whose curve falls from the very tip of the head right down to the base of the lower back, in the deft carving which brings your attention to the summit, and the hands resting on the temples – which explains the remarkable power expressed by this sculpture.

Although the head is that of a classical kandiboang sculpture - a heart-shaped face extending down in line with an excessively exaggerated nose, which refers to the traditional headdresses worn by men on ceremonial occasions – with this example,  the volume is rendered all the more exceptional by the radically reduced body, and by the concentration of dynamics within closed curves.

Stone carved, and with a depth of patina with attests to its 19th century origin.
