Catalogue Note
Stefano Vanneo (c.1493-c.1540) wrote this treatise in Italian in 1531, reflecting his experience as a choir-master. He is also reported to have been a composer, though nothing survives. Unlike many writers of the era, Vanneo emphasizes practical matters rather than abstract theory; for example, he urges singers to listen to each other, in order to treat dissonances musically.
