Catalogue Note

A fine, uncommon, example of Pfitzner's lieder style, a setting of a poem by Ludwig Jacobowski. Written in 1901, the song was dedicated to Ilse Lerner, the wife of polar explorer Theodor Lerner. The autograph diverges in many important details - concerning articulation, dynamic markings and even pitch - from the edition of the song in Hans Pfitzner, Sämtliche Lieder mit Klavierbegleitung, i (Mainz etc., Schott, 1979), pp. 162-165.
